Setting initial points when creating a card

Learn how to assign initial points to your cards and discover why starting with rewards boosts customer loyalty.

When you create a card in Welcome Back, you have the option to assign initial points — bonus points that new customers receive automatically the moment they enroll.

Why give initial points?

Starting with some points already on the card makes a huge difference in activation rates. A customer who sees 10 points already loaded feels immediately invested — they're closer to their first reward and more motivated to come back to earn the rest.

Research consistently shows that loyalty programs with a "head start" have significantly higher usage rates than those starting from zero.

How to configure initial points

Go to Loyalty → your card → Edit → Card Rules. In the Initial Points field, enter the number of points new customers receive when they enroll. Set it to 0 if you don't want to offer a head start.

What number to use?

A good starting point is 10–20% of the points needed for the first reward. For example, if your first reward unlocks at 100 points, giving 10–20 initial points feels meaningful without giving away the reward for free.
